Three locals have been honoured for
servicing the community, receiving
their Order of Australia Medals last
Loxton historians Peter and Carla Magarey,
along with long-serving emergency services
volunteer David Ward were among those
recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours
List in June and received their medals at
Government House last week.
Mr Ward said it was a “great honour” to
receive his medal.
“You sit there and you hear everyone else’s
citations and you think to yourself, ‘what are
you doing here?’,” he said.
“It was really great.
“You can’t put it into words.”
The event was held at Government House
last Monday, with the South Australian
Governor Hieu Van Le presenting the medals.
“The governor and his wife are very socia-
ble and really great to chat to,” Mr Ward said.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the ceremony. It was
nice to be there.”
Mr Ward was recognised for his volunteer-
ing and roles within the State Emergency
Service, Loxton RSL, Loxton Retirement
Village, Loxton CATCH centre and as a
Justice of the Peace.
Mrs Magarey said she felt as though Peter
and herself received the medals on behalf of
“I find that I get so much out of it (vol-
unteering) from so many others, that to me,
I was receiving it on behalf of our teams in
various directions,” she said.
“We couldn’t have done it without them.”
Both Mr and Mrs Magarey were recog-
nised for their service to the community,
which included authoring and co-authoring
numerous publications about Loxton’s his-
tory, Loxton Mardi Gras committee positions,
roles within Loxton Christian Fellowship,
along with Christian radio and a magazine.
The duo are authors of the The Years Gone

Meanwhile, Mr Magarey was recognised
for his service to horticulture during his role
as a plant pathologist.
All three locals were joined by family
members at the ceremony.
