Loxton dominated the first day of the
The event is played over three days, in Loxton,
Red Cliffs and Mildura.
Hot weather on all three days proved taxing on all
In the Loxton leg, local players Graham MacInnes
and Karen Henwood took the honours.
MacInnes returned a fine 40 points, while Henwood
scored 38 points.
The heat did not affect the scoring, with scores in
the high to mid thirties necessary for players to share
in the prizes.
John Henwood also had an outstanding day, win-
ning the men's B grade with 40 points while another
Loxton player, Jenny Patching, was the best of the B
Loxton members also figured strongly in the final
tally over the three days.
Karen Henwood and Marlene Tyler shared the
women's A grade 54 hole prizes, as did Ashley
Pfeifer and Tom Edwards in the men's A grade.
In midweek golf, Andrew Hum matched Brett
Proud's effort last week in parring the course, this
time accumulating 40 points from his handicap of
three, while newcomer Cathy Cahill made an impact
in the women's par event with a winning score of

RSL s nine-shot victory

Loxton RSL brought Waikerie's
early season run crashing to a halt
with a nine-shot victory in Bowls
Riverland division one Saturday
Steve Roberts was in front for the
majority of his match with Waikerie's
Gary Pursche, pulling away late to win
by five shots.
RSL's Geoff Huppatz picked up six
threes in a dominant performance against
Lee led at the break, but Huppatz
stormed home to win by nine.
Loxton RSL's Jade Wright held off
Wayne Collins to win by four.
A six to Collins helped him keep in
touch as he reduced the margin after the
Roger Davies picked up Waikerie's
only rink win, beating Lew Westbrook by
Davies kept Westbrook scoreless until
the seventh end, but by the 14th they were
level at 13-all.
Davies then pushed ahead late in the
game to win 24-17.
Berri knocked off Loxton Blue by 19
shots to remain undefeated.
Graham Butt had the biggest win of the
day, defeating Brad Semmler 32-10.
Butt picked up a five, two fours and a
three during the game on his way to an
easy victory, which proved the difference
between the two teams overall.
Loxton Blue's Vic Pavia upset Dennis
Treloar, bursting away after 14 ends to
win by six shots.
John Vaughan had a close encounter
with Berri's Andrew Hill, with the lead no
more than five shots all day.
Vaughan picked up three threes and a
four in four ends to win by four shots.
Berri's Andy Gapco beat Loxton Blue's
Terry Thurston in the final rink.
The game was close until the 16th end
when Gapco picked up a three to move
clear. He eventually won by seven shots.
Renmark kept Loxton Yellow winless,
triumphing by 25 shots.
Renmark won all four rinks to pick up
some valuable points.
Sean Leesue had an interesting tussle
against Loxton Yellow's Brian Bullock,
coming back from 2-10 down to win 16
of the next 17 ends and picking up a 22-
Steve Ivanovic put away a competitive
Peter Kimber by 11 shots. Ivanovic got
out to an early 13-shot lead, but Kimber's
rink persisted and got back to within three
before Ivanovic's four pulled away again.
John Thompson won by three shots on
the last end against Des Schliebs.
Schliebs trailed by as much as 14 before
the break, but got scores back to 20-20
with an end remaining.
He held three on the head until
Thompson picked up the jack, carrying
it back for three shots and a win for his
Renmark's Bill Dopson and Loxton
Yellow's Neil Thiele had a close match,
with Dopson doing enough to stay in front
and win by two.
Renmark RSL caused an upset against
RSL won by 11 shots overall, claiming
three rink victories.
Mal Inglis won comfortably against
Dennis Wutke 27-10, while Ken Knight
also had a great win, beating Barmera's
John Morena 21-17.
RSL's John van der Wyst had a tight
victory over Ray Kuchel, while Barmera's
Phil Ashton ensured it was not a clean
sweep with a three-shot triumph over Ron
