Bowling season kicks off
It was a disappointing
start for local teams in the
opening round of Bowls
Riverland's Saturday division
Loxton Yellow, Loxton RSL and
Loxton Blue all struggled to get a
win on the board.
Renmark overcame Loxton Blue
by 12 shots on Saturday.
A big win to Brad Semmler over
Steve Ivanovic was not enough to
get Loxton Blue over the line dur-
ing Saturday's match.
John Thompson, Sean Leesue
and Bill Dopson did it easy in their
matches to see Renmark cruise to
Barmera held on for a narrow
seven-shot win over Loxton
Ray Kuchel and Phil Ashton led
the way for Barmera, winning by a
combined total of 21.
Jade Wright and Lew Westbrook
did their best to keep Loxton RSL
in the contest in the opening round
Reigning premier Berri defeated
Loxton Yellow by eight shots
in a tight tussle.
All four rinks were close, with
Berri's Dennis Treloar finishing
even with Des Schliebs and Andy
Gapco doing likewise with Loxton
Yellow's Brian Bullock.
Andrew Hill and Graham Butt
won their rinks to give Berri the
Waikerie was the biggest winner
in the opening round.
Waikerie defeated Renmark
RSL by 30 shots to shoot
straight to the top of the ladder.
Roger Davies and David Lee had
massive wins for Waikerie.
Davies beat Ken Knight by 16
shots and Lee overcame van der
Wyst by 21.
Wayne Collins was also trium-
phant for Waikerie, beating Ron
Adam by three, while Mal Inglis
recorded RSL's only victory, beat-
ing Gary Pursche by 10.

Loxton moved to the top
of the ladder in Wednesday
pennant bowls last week,
beating Waikerie by 16 shots.
Loxton is now the only team on
two wins from as many matches.
Bernie Mattner led the way for
Loxton, with a 25-17 win over
Jenny Strauss, while Margaret
Schutz had an eight-shot win.
Nancy Teasdale was the
only Waikerie skipper to claim
points, sharing them with Rae
Renmark had its first win of the
season, beating Barmera by
Jocie Cooper, Sandy Schulz
and Betty Coombs were all tri-
umphant for Renmark.
Lyrup played its first game
of the season and brought
Renmark RSL back to earth with
an eight-shot win.
Sue Lloyd and Noreen Burns
were big winners for Lyrup,
while Cathy Topperwien won for
Loxon had a win in the division
two competition, while Loxton
RSL Green and Loxton triumphed
in division three last week.
Meanwhile, Loxton White had
a big win over Barmera Blue in
the midweek triples, defeating the
lakeside team by 21-points.
Loxton Red, and Loxton RSL
also recorded wins last week.

District Bowling Club on
Sunday for the annual Crowe

By the end of the third game, the
field had narrowed to a possible six
After the final game, two Loxton
teams comprising of Graeme Millard,
Lynn Kimber, David Kimber, Neil
Thiele (skipper) and Errol Shultz,
Lou Recchia, Margaret Schutz,
Trevor Schulz (skipper), were tied
with equal points.
To gain a winner, both teams
returned to the rink they last played
on, playing one bowl each to a one
metre circle drawn on the green max-
imum distance from the mat.
In a tense shoot-out, the winners
were Thiele's team with three out of
four bowls entering the circle, while
Schulz's team were only centimetres
from replicating the feat.
Other minor places were filled
by teams skippered by Loxton's
Des Schliebs and a combination of
Renmark and Renmark RSL players
skipperd by Eddie Schulz.
